Kingsteignton is a town located in the county of Devon, England. The town is situated on the River Teign, at the southern edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Kingsteignton is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the beaches of the English Riviera, as well as its many historical and architecturally significant buildings.
The most notable historical building in Kingsteignton is undoubtedly the church of St Michael the Archangel. History of Kingsteignton
Kingsteignton likely dates back to the late 9th or early 10th century, when it was first mentioned in the AngloSaxon Chronicle. It was part of the Hundred of Hantsleigh in Devon, and belonged to the Bishop of Winchester. In 1086, the Domesday Book records that the manor of King’s Tainton was worth £10 and had 24 ploughable acres.
The town grew around the Sheepstor Brook, which powered several mills in the town, and became known for its cloth production. In the 13th century, a bridge was built across the brook, and in 1285 the town was granted a charter to hold a weekly market. By the 14th century, the town had a weekly corn market and two annual fairs.
During the English Civil War, the town was a Royalist stronghold. In 1646, the town was captured by Parliamentarian forces after a threeweek siege.
Kingsteignton continued to grow in the 18th and 19th centuries, with the construction of several churches, a grammar school, and a town hall. The coming of the railways in the 19th century brought further growth, and by the early 20th century the town was a thriving market town.
Today, Kingsteignton is a commuter town for the city of Exeter. It has a variety of shops and businesses, as well as several primary and secondary schools.
