History of Hindley
Hindley is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, England. It is situated on the flatlands east of Wigan and northwest of Leigh, between Lowton to the north, Westhoughton to the southeast and Abram to the southwest. Originally a rural farming community, Hindley became an industrial town with coal mining, cotton spinning, hat making and engineering being the main industries. The town grew rapidly during the first half of the 19th century as the spinning and weaving industries flourished.
Hindley was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as being in the Hundred of West Derby in the county of Lancashire. The name Hindley means “cultivated land on a hill”, from the Old English words hind + leah.
The first coal mine in Hindley was sunk in 1750, and by the early 19th century there were several coal mines in the town. The cotton industry also flourished in the town, with many spinning and weaving mills being built. The first hat factory was established in Hindley in 1815, and by the late 19th century there were several hat factories in the town. Engineering also became an important industry in Hindley, with several engineering works being established in the town.
By the early 20th century, Hindley had become a densely populated town, with a population of over 24,000.
