Gateshead is a town in Tyne and Wear, North East England. The town lies on the southern bank of the River Tyne, opposite Newcastle upon Tyne. The town centre is notable for its architecture, including the Sage Gateshead, the Angel of the North and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
In Roman times, Gateshead was known as Vicus ad Portum or Portus Gabinus. These names suggest that Gateshead may have been a trading post for the Romans. The first record of Gateshead is from the 2nd century AD when the Roman writer Decimus Magnus Maximus included it in his list of the 28 cities of Britain.
The AngloSaxon Chronicle Gateshead is not mentioned in the AngloSaxon Chronicle, but Newcastle is. The first recorded reference to Gateshead is from 1068 when William the Conqueror ordered an area of land to be ploughed so that a castle could be built. The castle was built in 1069 and later became known as Newcastle Castle.
The town of Gateshead was established in the 12th century. The first reference to Gateshead is in 1130 when it is mentioned in the Pipe Rolls as Gatheshevede. The second is in 1138 when Henry I granted a charter to the monks of Durham Cathedral Priory to hold a weekly market in Gatheshead.
In the 13th century, Gateshead grew into a prosperous market town. It was a member of the Hanseatic League, meaning it traded with other members of this important organisation. The town’s market rights were confirmed in a charter issued by King Henry III in 1228.
