History of Haydock
Haydock is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, Merseyside, England. It lies on the main A580 road between Liverpool and St Helens.
The first record of Haydock is from 1220 when William le Norreys granted land in Norrisley to Henry deHaydok. It is thought that Haydock developed from a small hamlet on the site of presentday Haydock Park racecourse. In the 13th century, Haydock was a small farming community with a few scattered farms. By the early 14th century, the population had increased to the point where a church was built.
In the late 17th century, Haydock became a stop on the Liverpool to Prescot turnpike road. This brought an influx of commerce and industry to the town and by the early 19th century, Haydock was a thriving industrial community with a population of around 3,000. The industries that flourished in Haydock during this time included coal mining, brick making and textile manufacturing.
The coming of the railways in the 1830s brought further growth to Haydock. The first railway line, the Liverpool and Bury Railway, opened in 1848 and ran through Haydock en route to Bury. This was followed by the opening of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1849. These railway lines brought increased trade and commerce to Haydock and helped to further grow the town.
Today, Haydock is a residential suburb of St Helens with a population of around 20,000. However, the town still retains its links to its industrial past with a number of businesses operating in the town centre.
