History of Kellogg
Kellogg is a city in the Silver Valley of Shoshone County in northern Idaho, in the northwestern United States. The population was 7,012 at the 2010 census. Kellogg is the county seat of Shoshone County and the principal city of the Silver Valley Mining District, one of the most productive silvermining districts in the United States.
Kellogg is named after Noah Kellogg who, with disagreement from his fellow prospectors, established the first silver claim in the Coeur d’Alene area in February 1885. This event initiated the Silver Rush of 1886.
Idaho’s silver production peaked in the late 1880s, and then declined. The center of activity shifted to the Bunker Hill Mine and Smelter complex south of Kellogg, which operated until 1981. During the Great Depression, all the silver mines in the area closed, except for the Hecla Mine, which continued to produce until 2000.
The economy of Kellogg and the surrounding area is now largely dependent on tourism and recreation, as well as forest products. The Once upon a Time Scenic drives passes through the center of town andconnects Kellogg with Wallace, another historic silver mining town.several of the old mining properties are now part of the Silver Mountain Resort, which includes the Silver Mountain ski area, the Kellogg Golf Course, multiplex movie theater, water park, and gondola ride.
