History of Ocean City (Maryland)
Ocean City, Maryland is an American risktaking beach town and resort located on a barrier island off the Eastern seaboard. The town is famous for its Boardwalk, a threemile wooden promenade along the beach.Ocean City was founded in 1869 as a destination for religious travelers and has been a popular summer retreat since the early 20th century. The town is strictly alcoholfree and enforces a familyfriendly atmosphere.
The first recorded Ocean City appeared on a map of the coast of Maryland compiled by English cartographer John Smith in 1608. The map shows a settlement called “New Town” located on what is now Isle of Wight Bay. The town was probably named by Smith for the body of water that is now known as the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1773, a map of Maryland compiled by French cartographer JacquesNicolas Bellin showed a settlements called “Ocean City” and ” Isle de la Cité” located on opposite sides of presentday Route 50. Bellin’s map is the first known record of the name “Ocean City”.
Ocean City was laid out in 1869 by developers Isaac Coffin and Levi Boxwell as a residential resort for Methodists. The original town was located on the bay side of the island and consisted of about 20 streets running parallel to the shoreline.
The town was incorporated in 1875. In 1881, a bridge was built connecting the island to the mainland. The first hotel, the Atlantic House, was built in 1884.
By 1890, Ocean City had become a popular summer resort for wealthy families from Philadelphia and Baltimore. The town was expanded to the ocean side of the island and a boardwalk was built.
In 1902, a storm destroyed much of the town and the boardwalk. The town was rebuilt and the boardwalk was extended to three miles.
In 1925, the Maryland General Assembly passed a law making Ocean City the only dry town in Maryland. The law was stricter than most dry laws in the country and prohibited the sale of any alcoholic beverage, not just liquor. The law was enacted to make Ocean City a familyfriendly resort.
In 1964, Hurricane Hazel caused extensive damage to the town. The storm surge destroyed the boardwalk and many buildings. The town was rebuilt and the boardwalk was repaired.
In 1976, Ocean City celebrated its centennial. The town had grown to a population of 7,000 and was a popular summer destination for families from the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area.
