History of Greenfield (Massachusetts)
Greenfield is a city in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 17,456 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Franklin County. Greenfield was first settled in 1686. The town was incorporated in 1753. The town is named for its village green.
The Greenfield area was originally inhabited by the Pocomtuc tribe, a group of Algonquianspeaking Native Americans. The Pocomtuc were a peaceful people and had a good relationship with the English settlers. However, they were displaced by the Mohawk people in the early 18th century.
The Mohawk were a warlike people and often clashed with the English settlers. In 1745, the Mohawk leader King Hendrick attacked the English settlement at Deerfield, just north of Greenfield. The town was burned and many of the settlers were killed or taken captive.
This event is known as the Deerfield massacre. It was one of the last major Indian raids in New England.
After the massacre, the Mohawk moved north to Canada. The Pocomtuc tribe returned to the Greenfield area and lived peacefully with the settlers.
In 1753, the town of Greenfield was formally incorporated. The village green was created at this time. It was used for public meetings and other events.
