History of Jackson (Wyoming)

The Jackson Hole valley was first inhabited by Native Americans several thousand years ago. While theexact history of the valley’s first inhabitants is not known, it is believed that the Shoshone tribe was the first to settle in the area. The Shoshone lived in the valley until the late 1800s when they were forced out by the Crow tribe.

The first European to visit the Jackson Hole valley was John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Colter explored the valley in 1807 and is credited with discovery of Yellowstone National Park.

In the early 1800s, the beaver fur trade was the main industry in the Rocky Mountain West. Trappers and traders came to the Jackson Hole valley in search of beaver pelts. In 1829, Jedediah Smith, one of the most famous trappers of the time, led a party of trappers through the valley.

The first settlers in Jackson Hole were David and Sandra Elisha Jackson, who homesteaded land near presentday Jackson in 1884. The town of Jackson was founded in 1897. Jackson’s early economy was based on ranching and tourism.
