Sights in Brownsville
Brownsville is a city in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 175,023 at the 2010 census. It is one of the oldest cities in the Rio Grande Valley, having been founded in 1848 by Charles Stillman, a businessman from Connecticut. Brownsville is the county seat of Cameron County, and is coextensive with the city of Brownsville. With a long history of war and peace, Brownsville has had a diverse culture, originally populated by various tribes of Native Americans including the Karankawa, the Atakapan, the Yamasee, the Chickasaw, the Choctaw and the Seminole. Spanish and French explorers planted the area which would become Brownsville with sugarcane and fruits, and later the town became a center of the cattle trade.
The Battle of Brownsville took place on November 6, 1863, in which Union soldiers repelled an attack by Confederate soldiers, helping to solidify Union control over Brownsville. In the 19th century Brownsville became known for shipbuilding, and the town’s economy grew with the construction of the railroad in 1904. The city’s population reached almost 37,000 by the mid 1920s.
During World War II army general Dwight Eisenhower and his wife Mamie Eisenhower chose Brownsville as their place of retirement, living in a house on Boca Chica Boulevard overlooking the Laguna Madre. After the war, Brownsville saw a demographic boom, with the population almost quadrupling from 1950 to 1980. Brownsville is now a stop on the Ranch to Market Road 649, and is home to Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport.

The 1886 EarleHenderson House is one of the few remaining preVictorian era residences in Brownsville. It is a twostory wood frame building with a staircase and balcony, and is located on Broadway Street in the Historic District of Brownsville. The home was built by William R. Earle, a Brownsville merchant, and was purchased in 1893 by L. H. Henderson, a prominent lawyer and banker. It remained in the Henderson family until 1978, when it was restored and opened as a bed and breakfast inn.
The Brownsville Heritage Museum is located in the Historic District of Brownsville, and is housed in the former Renaissance Revival style Brownsville National Bank building. The museum contains exhibits on the history of Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley, as well as a library and archives.
The Confederados Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the Confederate soldiers who settled in Brownsville after the American Civil War. The cemetery is located on price Road near the Brownsville Sports Park.

The city of Brownsville, Texas, has a long and storied history. Founded in 1849, the city was named for Major Jacob Brown, who served in the MexicanAmerican War.
