Morristown is a city in and the county seat of Hamblen County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 29,137 at the 2010 United States Census. It is the principal city of the Morristown, Tennessee Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Grainger, Jefferson, and Hamblen counties. The Morristown metropolitan area is also a part of the KnoxvilleSeviervilleLa Follette Combined Statistical Area. This area is home to several prehistoric archaeological sites.
Morristown is primarily located in northeastern Tennessee, approximately 36mi southwest of Knoxville and 20mi northeast of Jefferson City. The city was established in 1786 by settlers from Virginiathe area was part of what was later known as the Ceded Lands. It was incorporated as a city on September 1, 1855.
The city of Morristown has many historical landmarks, some of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Old Grey Court House, built in 1856; the Lemon House, built in 1859 and used as a hospital during the Civil War; and the Morris Mansion, built in 1867. Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, organized in 1809, is the oldest church in the city. The city is also home to Crockett Tavern Museum, Morristown College, and the Rose Center.

Morristown, Tennessee is a city in and the county seat of Hamblen County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 29,137 at the 2010 United States Census. It is the principal city of the Morristown, Tennessee Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Grainger, Hamblen and Jefferson counties.
The first EuropeanAmerican settlers arrived in what is now Morristown in 1786. They established a courthouse, which served as the county seat of government when Hamblen County was established in 1819. The city was named after Gideon Morris, developer and surveyor of the area.
During the Civil War, Morristown was a Union army stronghold. The Battle of Morristown occurred in March 1863. Union forces under General Ambrose E. Burnside drove Confederate troops from the area of presentday Downtown Morristown, forcing them south toward Long Island in the Tennessee River.
In 1866, Morristown College was founded for AfricanAmerican students; it operated until 1899. The Lincoln Memorial University, founded in 1865 for the education of both AfricanAmerican and white students, also operated in Morristown from 1899 to 1958, when it relocated to nearby Harrogate, Tennessee.
Morristown has been the site of many important events in American history. In 1793, President George Washington stayed in the city while en route to Knoxville, Tennessee. He also visited Morristown on two other occasions. On October 7, 1793, he addressed the citizens of Morristown, encouraging them to pay their taxes promptly and punctually to support the new national government.
In September 1796, President Washington stopped in Morristown en route to his southern tour. While in Morristown, he ate at Mrs. Laughlin’s boarding house, which still stands today as the Elms Plantation.
In 1858, Abraham Lincoln spoke at a political rally in Morristown. The speech, delivered on the Courthouse lawn, was one of only a few speeches he made during his unsuccessful campaign for the Senate.
In 1863, President Lincoln visited Morristown while en route to Chattanooga, Tennessee, following the Battle of Gettysburg. He was accompanied by several members of his cabinet. The president spoke to the citizens of Morristown, commending them for their Union loyalty during the war. He also praised the bravery of the soldiers from Morristown who had fought in the battle.
In 1864, General Ulysses S. Grant used Morristown as his headquarters during the Union army’s drive toward Chattanooga. He was joined by President Lincoln, who visited the city on two occasions. The first visit was in late August, 1864, when the president reviewed the troops camped near Morristown. The second was in early September, when the two leaders discussed strategy.
In 1866, Morristown was the site of a large freedman’s bureau hospital. The hospital treated former slaves who were sick or injured. It was one of the largest such hospitals in the country.
In 1867, Morristown was the site of a large Ku Klux Klan rally. Over 5,000 Klan members, including many from other states, attended the rally.
In 1868, Morristown was the site of the National Convention of the Universal suffrage Association. The goal of the convention was to secure the right to vote for AfricanAmericans.
In 1874, Morristown was the site of a nationally publicized trial. John T. Scopes was accused of teaching evolution in his high school biology class. The case, known as the Scopes Monkey Trial, captured the attention of the nation. Scopes was ultimately found guilty, but the verdict was later overturned on a technicality.
In 1925, the first airmail flight took off from the Morristown Airport. The flight, which was bound for Knoxville, Tennessee, was piloted by Charles Lindbergh.
In 1930, the last screws were driven into the final beam of the Crockett Tavern Museum. The museum, which is now a National Historic Landmark, commemorates the life of Davy Crockett.
In 1958, the Lincoln Memorial University relocated to nearby Harrogate, Tennessee.
In 1963, Morristown was the site of a large civil rights rally. Over 10,000 people, including many from other states, attended the rally. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at the rally, urging people to continue to fight for racial equality.
