History of Irvington
Incorporated in April of 1958, the City of Irvington is situated on the western shore of Mobile Bay in southwest Alabama. The city limits encompass approximately 11.5 square miles and there are two minor bodies of water within the limits, Buck Creek and Murdock Canal. The mean elevation of Irvington is 25 feet above sea level.
The area now known as Irvington was first settled in the early 1830s by John and Penelope Kelly Carney. The Carneys, along with other settlers, came to this area from Mississippi, Georgia, and other parts of Alabama attracted by the fertile land and the promise of a milder climate. The first permanent structure built in the area was a log cabin erected by the Carneys in 1834.
The growth of the community was slow during the early years. The population of Irvington did not exceed 100 until after the Civil War. Even though the population was small, the community did have a school, a church, a grist mill, and a saw mill.
The town began to grow rapidly in the early 1900s when the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad built a line through the area. The town was named after Washington Irving, the American author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle.”
The City of Irvington was officially incorporated in 1958. Since that time, the city has experienced slow, but steady growth. The city limits were expanded in 1962, 1967, and 1974.
The 2010 census showed a population of 1,383. The median household income was $35,804 and the per capita income was $17,849.
