History of Indianola
Indianola was founded in 1849 as a seaport town on the Gulf of Mexico in what is now Sunflower County, Mississippi. The town was named for the nearby Indian tribe, the Mississippian Natchez. It functioned as a summer resort for wealthy planters from the nearby Mississippi Delta. Indianola became the county seat in 1851 and prospered as a port due to the agricultural export trade.
The American Civil War severely damaged Indianola; the town was captured by Union forces in 1863 and it was partially destroyed by an explosion set off by the Confederates in 1864. The population declined after the war. Indianola revived briefly in the 1870s as a result of the development of a Succession canal system that allowed shipping of cotton to the outside world. New railways also brought trade and tourists to the area.
The 1890s brought another period of decline to Indianola as the Succession canal system was destroyed by a series of hurricanes. The city was further weakened by a yellow fever epidemic and many of the remaining residents left Indianola in search of a healthier climate. The city was largely abandoned by the early 20th century.
A few residents remained in Indianola and in the mid20th century the town experienced a modest revival as a result of the establishment of a fish hatchery and a shrimpprocessing plant. In the late 20th century Indianola once again became a destination for tourists, many of whom came to visit the restored mansions of the city’s preCivil War era.
