History of Fort Collins

Fort Collins is a city located in the state of Colorado in the United States. The city is situated along the Cache La Poudre River in Larimer County, approximately 60 miles (97 km) north of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver. Fort Collins is the home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Larimer County. The United States Census Bureau estimated that in 2019, the population of the city was 166,880.

The city was founded as a military outpost of the United States Army in 1864. It was named after Lieutenant Colonel William O. Collins, who was killed in the American Civil War. It served as a hub for supplies and troops during the war. Fort Collins was officially incorporated as a city in 1873.

The city has a strong economic base, with a diverse mix of manufacturing, service, retail, and hightech industries. In 1873, the Army reestablished a military post at the site of presentday Fort Collins. The post was named Fort Collins after Lieutenant Colonel William O. Collins, who had been killed in the American Civil War.

In 1874, the Union Pacific Railroad reached Fort Collins. The railroad brought increased trade and settlement to the area.

In 1879, the City of Fort Collins was incorporated.
