History of Mansfield (Connecticut)
The town of Mansfield, Connecticut was first settled in 1672 by a group of farmers from Farmington. The new settlers named the town after their former hometown in Nottinghamshire, England. Mansfield was originally part of Windham County, but became part of Hartford County when it was established in 1666. The town was incorporated in 1703.
Mansfield grew slowly in its early years. The town’s first mill was built in 1674, and its first school was established in 1703. The population of the town only grew to about 500 by the year 1800.
The town began to grow more rapidly in the early 19th century, due in part to the opening of the Farmington Canal in 1828. The canal provided a ready transportation route for the town’s dairy products and other agricultural goods. The population of Mansfield grew to over 1,600 by 1850.
The Civil War period was a difficult one for Mansfield. The town was divided over the issue of slavery, and many residents left to join the Union army. The town’s economy was badly hurt by the war, and it was not until the 1870s that the town began to recover.
