Hilo is one of the oldest cities in Hawaii, and has a rich history. It was the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1812 to 1819, and was the original site of the Hawaiian Capital of Pāpa‘iho‘onuku until 1840. Hilo was also an important trading center in the 19th century, being the first major port for ships arriving from North America or Europe.
Today, Hilo is a major tourist destination, being home to Hawaii Volcano National Park, as well as numerous other attractions. The city is also home to the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and is a gateway to the Hawaiian Islands for many cruise ships.
The first settlement at Hilo was established in the early 18th century by the local chief, BhAli‘i. This settlement was located at the present site of the Mokupapapa Discovery Center.
