History of Hastings (Nebraska)
The city of Hastings is located in both Adams and Clay counties in the state of Nebraska, United States. The city is situated on the Platte River, approximately 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Kearney and approximately 100 miles (160 km) west of Lincoln. Hastings is considered part of the Hastings micropolitan statistical area, which includes all of Adams and Clay Counties. The micropolitan area has an estimated population of 81,597 as of 2019.
The city was founded in 1872 at the junction of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. It was named after Colonel Thomas B. Hastings, who designed the crossing of the two railroad lines. Hastings was platted in April 1873, and officially incorporated as a city in 1874. The city grew rapidly in its early years, reaching a population of 1,500 by 1880.
The city is well known for its role in the history of the United States’ western expansion. In 1874, General George Custer launched his expedition to the Black Hills from Hastings. Custer and his troops famously discovered gold in the Black Hills, leading to the Great Sioux War of 1876. The city was also the site of the Lindenmeier Site, one of the most important archaeological sites related to the Folsom culture.
