History of Hattiesburg
Founded in 1882 by Civil War veteran William H. Hardy, Hattiesburg was named in honor of Hardy’s wife Hattie. The town was incorporated two years later with a population of 400. Hattiesburg’s growth began in earnest in 1900 when it was selected as a stop on the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad. By 1912, the population had grown to 3,000.
In 1917, the first Baptist hospital in the state was established in Hattiesburg. This was followed by the founding of the first Mississippi high school for AfricanAmerican students in 1919. The city continued to grow throughout the 1920s and 1930s, reaching a peak population of over 30,000 by 1940.
Hattiesburg’s economy was diversity during World War II as it was home to a number of military bases and industries. The city’s population decreased after the war, but began to grow again in the 1950s. The 1960s brought significant changes to Hattiesburg as the city became a center of the Civil Rights Movement.
