History of South Saint Paul
Prior to European settlement, the land on which South Saint Paul now sits was occupied by Dakota and other indigenous peoples. The first Europeans in the area were French fur traders, who built a fort near the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers in the late 1600s or early 1700s. The Dakota called this area “Kaposia”, meaning “little white Buffalo Rock”.
White settlement of the area began in earnest in the 1850s, when farmers from eastern states came to the Midwest in search of fertile land to farm. The village of South St. Paul was incorporated in 1887. The city’s name comes from its location south of the Minnesota River and Saint Paul, Minnesota’s capital city.
The early years of South St. Paul were dominated by the meatpacking industry. The city was home to several large slaughterhouses and meatpacking plants, including Armour, Swift, and Cudahy. These companies attracted a wave of immigrants to South St. Paul, many of them from Eastern Europe. The immigrants made up the bulk of the city’s workforce and helped to shape its character.
The meatpacking industry began to decline in the mid20th century, as the industry consolidated and shifted its operations to larger cities. This resulted in job losses and population decline in South St. Paul. The city has since reinvented itself as a bedroom community for the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
South St. Paul is located in eastern Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The city lies on the south bank of the Minnesota River, just downstream from the confluence of the Mississippi River.
