History of Harpers Ferry
Harpers Ferry is a historic town in Jefferson County, West Virginia, United States. The town is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the Shenandoah flows into the Potomac. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. The population was 286 at the 2010 census. The town is best known for Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the John Brown Museum.
The town was first settled by the English in the 1730s as “Shenandoah Falls” at the site of an important Native American village and crossroads. In 1755, it was named “Winchester” after Colonel James Wood. The town changed hands frequently during the border disputes between the English and the French prior to the French and Indian War.
In 1763, George Washington surveyed the Virginia side of the falls while on a mission to deliver a message to the French claiming the Ohio River Valley for the English crown. During the American Revolutionary War, the town was again a site of great importance. It changed hands several times and was the site of many military actions, most famously the Battle of Harpers Ferry.
In the 19th century, the town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, as runaway slaves made their way north to freedom. The town was also the site of John Brown’s raid on the Armory in 1859, an event which played a significant role in precipitating the Civil War.
