History of Golden
Golden, Colorado, is one of the few remaining places in the Rockies where you can still find traces of the Old West. This former goldmining town is now a unique blend of pioneer history and modernday sophistication, with a downtown full of art galleries, antique stores, and good restaurants.
The first Europeans to visit the area were probably Spanish explorers in the 17th century. The first permanent white settlement was established in 1859, when prospectors (including some from the Lewis and Clark expedition) found gold in the area. The town was soon flooded with fortuneseekers, and Golden quickly became the territorial capital of Colorado.
However, the gold soon ran out, and by 1870 the population of Golden had shrunk to just 700. The town managed to survive, though, and in 1874 it became the home of the Colorado School of Mines. This helped to spur Golden’s growth, and by 1900 the population had reached 5,000.
The city has been through some tough times since then, including a devastating fire in 1909 and the great Depression of the 1930s. But it has always managed to rebound, and today Golden is once again a thriving community.
