The M1 motorway and the A1(M) motorway pass to the east and west of Garforth respectively. Garforth is served by East Coast Main Line trains at Garforth railway station. There are also a number of bus routes passing through the town.

History of Garforth
Garforth is a town in the metropolitan borough of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is situated just off the A1(M), 10 miles (16 km) east of Leeds city centre, and 5 miles (8 km) west of Selby. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Garforth was previously a coal mining town, with its origins dating back to the 11th century. The population of Garforth was 17,474 in 2011.
The name Garforth is derived from Old English and means “rough fortification”. It is known that there was a fortification in Garforth as early as 1086 when the Domesday Book was compiled. However, the fortification referred to is thought to have been little more than a fortified manor house or hunting lodge.
In the 12th century, a church dedicated to St Mary Magdalene was built in Garforth. The first recorded mention of the church is in the will of Walter de Gant, dated 1193. The church was rebuilt in the 14th century, and again in 1819.
The population of Garforth grew rapidly in the 19th century, due to the expansion of the coal mining industry in the area. At the time of the 1851 census, the population of Garforth was 1,206. By the time of the 1901 census, this had increased to 8,063.
The coal mines in Garforth were served by a branch of the Leeds and Selby Railway, which opened in 1834. The branch line ran from Garforth Junction, on the main line of the Leeds and Selby Railway, to a terminus at Garforth station. The coal mines in the area began to close in the early 20th century, and the last one closed in 1966. The branch line closed to passengers in 1951, and to freight in 1964.
Despite the decline of the coal mining industry, Garforth continued to grow in the 20th century. New housing estates were built to the north and east of the town, and the population of Garforth reached 17,474 in 2011.
