History of Alfreton
Alfreton is a town and civil parish in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, England. The town lies within the ancient Ward of Scarsdale. The town is situated 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Derby, 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Chesterfield and 31 miles (50 km) northeast of Stafford. According to the 2011 Census, Alfreton had a population of 28,340.
Alfreton was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. The name “Alfreton” means “Aelfred’s town”, and probably refers to Alfred the Great, who once owned the land.
The town’s market charter was granted by King Henry III in 1257, and its first market cross was erected the following year.
Alfreton Hall was built in the 17th century, and was the seat of the Gresley family. The hall was demolished in 1963, and is now the site of a housing estate.
The Gresley family also owned the Willoughby estate, which included much of the land on which the town now stands. The family sold the estate in 1922.
The AngloSaxon Chronicle records that Alfreton was destroyed by the Danes in 1010. It is not certain whether this refers to the whole town, or just the hall and estate.
The town’s market charter was revived in 1857, and a new market cross erected in 1858.
Alfreton Park was opened to the public in 1887.
Alfreton was in the hundred of Scarsdale, which was incorporated into Derbyshire in 1669.
In 1938, the Alfreton Rural District was formed, which included the towns of Alfreton, Ripley and Heanor.
