History of Gaffney

The city of Gaffney, South Carolina, was founded in the early 19th century and named after General Miles Standish Gaffney. The city’s growth was spurred by the arrival of the Charleston & Western Carolina Railway in 1873. Gaffney became a prosperous textile town in the early 20th century, with several mills operating in the city. The economic downturn of the late 20th century led to the closure of many of the city’s textile mills, but Gaffney has rebound in recent years and is now home to a growing manufacturing sector.
