History of Deming

Deming is a city in Luna County, New Mexico, United States, about 30 miles (48 km) west of the Texas state line and about 80 miles (130 km) north of the Mexican border. It is the county seat of Luna County, and is located in the southwestern portion of the state.

The city was founded in 1881, when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad reached the area. The city was named after Mary Ann Deming Crocker, wife of Charles Crocker, one of the railroad’s owners. The city rapidly grew in the early twentieth century as a result of the local mining industry, which reached its peak in the 1920s.

The city began to decline in the 1930s, following the closing of the mines, and its population declined steadily over the next several decades. In recent years, however, the city has begun to grow again, thanks in part to its proximity to the United StatesMexico border and its location on the Interstate 10 corridor.
