History of Geneva (New York)
The area now known as Geneva, New York was first settled by Europeans in 1779. The Seneca Nation of Native Americans had a village here called Kanadesaga until 1687 when they abandoned the site. The first Europeans to settle the area were mostly Quakers from Connecticut who were attracted to the area by its natural beauty and friendly native population. The settlers cleared the land and built farms. The town of Geneva was officially founded in 1806.
The town grew slowly but steadily in the early years. It was helped by being located on the main stagecoach route between Rochester and Syracuse. In 1824, the Erie Canal was built, passing just a few miles south of Geneva, and this made transportation even easier and hastened the town’s growth. By the mid19th century, Geneva was a thriving community with a population of over 3,000.
The town’s location on Seneca Lake makes it a natural center for the region’s booming wine industry. The first winery was established in 1827 and today there are over 100 wineries in the Finger Lakes region. Geneva is also home to Hobart and William Smith Colleges, which were founded in 1908.
