Clinton, New York, is a city in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 24,377 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oneida County.
The City of Clinton was incorporated on March 7, 1817, splitting off from the Town of Kirkland. The Village of Clinton was incorporated within the Town of Kirkland on April 19, 1827. Because of the village’s central location within the town, the village and then the city grew quickly, and by the middle of the 19th century it had become the largest community in central New York.
The Erie Canal passed through the center of the village of Clinton, connecting it to the Hudson River and the Great Lakes. It was completed in 1825.
The Clinton Silk Company was the largest employer in the city during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The company produced silk thread and fabric, and was the largest employer of women in the United States at that time.
