History of El Monte
El Monte, Spanish for “the mountain”, is a residential and industrial suburb of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. The city has a population of 113,475 as of the 2010 census. It is the 232nd largest city in the United States by land area.
El Monte is bordered by South El Monte on the west, Baldwin Park on the north and east, Irwindale on the northeast, Duarte on the southeast, and Bassett and unincorporated area of County on the southwest. The San Gabriel River forms much of the city’s southwestern boundary, and the Rio Hondo separates it from the City of Industry to the south.
The city was founded on April 5, 1876, when 81 residents met at Peck’s Corners (now Fulton Avenue and Garvey Avenue) to establish San Gabriel Wine Company. By August 1876, the community, now with a population of about 500, held its first election. George Peck was elected President and other officers were A.M. Brown, vicepresident; H.C. Wadsworth, treasurer; A.B. Sparks, assessor; and G.W. Patterson, constable. On September 6, 1876, the Board of Trustees of the new city took office.
In the early 20th century, El Monte was home to a large number of Japanese Americans living in hastily built housing developments towards the eastern end of the city. Most of the Japanese Americans who settled in El Monte did so during the late 1920s and early 1930s, when the American economy was suffering during the Great Depression.
As of the 2010 census, El Monte had a population of 113,475, down from 115,965 at the 2000 census. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.
According to the 2010 United States Census, El Monte had a median household income of $37,781, which is low for both the city and the county. The per capita income for the city was $16,063. About 21.4% of families and 26.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.1% of those under age 18 and 13.6% of those age 65 or over.
