History of Clifton (Arizona)
The first inhabitants of the Clifton area were the Mogollon people. These Native Americans lived in the area for centuries, and their legacy can still be seen in the ruins of the ancient cliff dwellings they built in the area.
The first European settlers to the area were Spanish missionaries, who arrived in the late 18th century. They established a mission in the nearby town of Nezvhi (now Coronado), and the Clifton area became part of the Spanish empire.
The area changed hands several times after the Spanish empire collapsed, eventually becoming part of the United States in 1854. The town of Clifton was founded in 1886, and named after the nearby Clifton Hills.
Clifton quickly became an important stop on the fledgling Arizona railroad, and grew into a thriving mining town. The discovery of rich copper deposits in the area made Clifton one of the most important mining towns in Arizona, and it remained so for many years.
