History of Edgartown

Edgartown is a town located on Martha’s Vineyard in Dukes County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 4,593 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dukes County.

The present name of Edgartown commemorates King Edgar, the first king of all England, who granted the island of Martha’s Vineyard to Sir Thomas Gates in 1602.

Theplace was first settled by English settlers in 1642, and was originallyknown as “Great Harbor.” The town was officially incorporated in1671. Early settlers in Edgartown were engaged in the whaling and codfishing industries.

In 1775, Edgartown was the site of the first landing of troops by boat during the American Revolutionary War, when General George Washington arrived with his continental army to fight the British for control of Boston.

After the war, Edgartown became an important whaling port, and many of the mansions which line Edgartown’s Main Street date from this period of prosperity.

Today, tourism is the town’s main industry, and Edgartown is a favorite summer vacation destination for both American and international visitors. The town features several beautiful beaches, historical landmarks, museums, shops, and restaurants.
