History of East Lansing

The City of East Lansing is located in the central area of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The city lies just east of the state capital, Lansing, and is adjacent to the campus of Michigan State University. East Lansing was incorporated as a city in 1907, and has a population of approximately 48,800 people.

The area that is now East Lansing was originally settled in 1847 by a man named George Van Cleve. Van Cleve’s log cabin, which still stands today, is the oldest building in Ingham County. The cabin is located on what is now the corner of Abbot Road and Albert Avenue.

In 1853, the legislature created the position of Surveyor General of Michigan and appointed John A. Grant to the post. Grant surveyed and platted much of the land in the central Michigan area, including the future site of East Lansing.

In 1855, the legislature authorized the establishment of the Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University). The college opened its doors in 1857 with a class of 12 students.

The Village of East Lansing was established in 1864. The village was originally part of the township of Meridian, but was given its own governing body in 1866. The village contained approximately 300 people at that time.

In 1885, the village of East Lansing annexed the neighboring village of Collegeville. This increased the size of the village to nearly 1,000 people.

In 1887, the Michigan Legislature passed a law allowing cities and villages to charter as “home rule” units of government. This meant that they would have more autonomy from the state in terms of governing their own affairs. East Lansing was one of the first municipalities to take advantage of this new law, and was officially chartered as a city in April of 1907.

The first city election was held in May of 1907, and resulted in the election of George W. Ashurst as the city’s first mayor.
