History of Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is a city in Iowa, United States. The city falls within the WaterlooCedar Falls metropolitan statistical area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 39,260. It is home to the University of Northern Iowa, a public university.

The first white settlers in what is now Cedar Falls were John and Lucy Perkins, who arrived in 1845. The city was originally known as Perkinsville, but was renamed to Cedar Falls in 1851 when it was platted. The name refers to the series of rapids in the Cedar River.

Cedar Falls became an industrial city in the late 19th century, thanks to the access to water power from the Cedar River. The city was also helped by its proximity to foreign markets via the railroad. The primary industry in the city was the manufacture of millstones, which were used in the many grist mills in the area. The city also became known for its furniture industry.

In 1854, the first train arrived in Cedar Falls, connecting the city to rest of the country. The population of the city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reaching 5,091 by 1900.

The University of Northern Iowa was founded in 1876 as the Iowa State Normal School. It later became a fouryear institution and eventually a university.

Cedar Falls began to grow beyond its industrial roots in the mid20th century. New neighborhoods were developed, and the city’s population continued to grow. The city annexed large areas of land in the 1960s and 1970s, including the neighborhoods of Black Hawk and Hansen Park.

The city’s population peaked in 1980 at 42,145. Since then, it has declined slightly, to an estimated 39,258 in 2018. Nevertheless, it remains the largest city in Black Hawk County.
