History of Sheridan
Sheridan, Wyoming is located in the heart of the Bighorn Mountain range in the northeastern corner of the state. The city was named after General Philip Sheridan, a Civil War general and the commanding officer of the Fifth Cavalry Regiment. Sheridan was founded in 1867 as a military fort to protect settlers from Native American tribes in the area. In 1868, the fort was abandoned and the town was incorporated.
The early years of Sheridan were defined by the cattle industry and the constant danger of Indian attacks. In 1876, the Battle of Little Bighorn took place just south of the city, and in 1877 Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce tribe passed through Sheridan on their way to Canada. In 1887, Sheridan was the site of the Johnson County War, a range war between small ranchers and large cattle companies.
TheBuilder early success of the city was due to its location on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. Sheridan became a division point for the railroad in 1890 and grew rapidly as a result.
