History of Carrollton

Carrollton is a city located in the northwestern quadrant of Dallas County, Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 119,097, making it the 23rd most populous city in the DallasFort Worth area.

The area was first settled by pioneers in the 1840s and was originally known as Peters Colony. In 1842, John Carpenter, who operated a gristmill on the creek, donated land for the establishment of Carrollton’s first school. The city was incorporated in 1873, and its name was changed to Carrollton in honor of Carrollton, Illinois, the hometown of many of the settlers.

Carrollton experienced rapid growth in the 1970s and 1980s, becoming one of the fastestgrowing cities in the United States. The city’s population exploded in 1990, when it was announced that Carrollton would be the new home of the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys’ move resulted in a construction boom, and the city’s population increased to over 130,000 by 2000.
