History of Cape Coral
Cape Coral is located in Lee County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 154,305, making it the 10th largest city in Lee County and the 21st largest city in Florida. Cape Coral is the 5th largest city in Southwest Florida. It is one of the seven municipalities in the county. The others are Fort Myers (the county seat), Bonita Springs, Estero, Lehigh Acres, North Fort Myers, and Sanibel.
The city was founded in 1957 by Gulf American Corporation, the developer of the Cape Coral area. Cape Coral was originally an unincorporated community with a few hundred residents. It was then incorporated as a city on August 13, 1970.
The city has a total area of 120 square miles (310 km2). Of this, 104 square miles (270 km2) is land and 16 square miles (41 km2) (13.3%) is water. The city has 400 miles (640 km) of canals, more than any other city in the world.
Cape Coral is connected to Fort Myers along the Caloosahatchee River by three bridges: the MidPoint Memorial Bridge, Cape Coral Bridge, and the Cape Coral – Fort Myers Beach Bridge (also known as the “Sky Bridge”).
Cape Coral is home to many people of German descent. The city has the largest percentage of Germans in Florida, and the second largest percentage of Germans in the United States (after New Ulm, Minnesota).
