The first written record of Brandon dates from 1075 in the Domesday Book, where it is listed as Brenchentone. The name is thought to derive from the Old English for “hill covered with broom”, a type of wild grass.
The town grew up around St. Mary’s Church, which dates from the 12th century. In the Middle Ages Brandon was an important way station on the pilgrims’ route to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury.
In the 17th century, the town prospered from the manufacture of woolen cloth. Brandon was also the site of England’s first iron foundry, established in 1565.
