History of Burwell
Between the 11th and 13th centuries, a market town grew up at Burwell, on the edge of the fenland in eastern Cambridgeshire. The town was located on the main route between the prosperous trading centres of Ely and Cambridge.
Burwell developed as a planned town, laid out in a regular grid pattern of streets. This type of town was known as a ‘new town’, and was quite different from the earlier AngloSaxon settlements, which were often haphazardly arranged.
The town had a market square, surrounded by timberframed shops and houses. A church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, was built in the centre of the square.
At its height in the 14th century, Burwell had a population of around 1,200. However, the town suffered from frequent flooding, and in 1327 a particularly severe flood caused widespread damage.
After this, the town began to decline, and by the 16th century it was described as being in a ‘ruinous condition’.
The decline of the town was partly due to the silting up of the fens, which made the area less commercially viable. In addition, the worsening economic conditions in the late Middle Ages led to a decline in trade.
Today, Burwell is a small town with a population of around 4,000. However, it still retains its historic market square and many of its timberframed buildings.
