History of Bedford (Pennsylvania)
Bedford is a borough and the county seat of Bedford County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. Bedford was laid out and founded by Colonel William Crawford in 1758. He named the town after the Duke of Bedford in appreciation for his assistance during the French and Indian War. It remained part of Cumberland County until 1771 when it became one of the initial thirteen counties of Pennsylvania.
The area was host to several battles during the American Revolutionary War. In June 1776, a party dispatched by George Washington to assess the area’s strategic importance reported that Bedford was the best location to build a fort to protect the western frontier of the rebelling colonies. On July 3, 1776, a force of about 1,500 Tories and British troops under the command of Major General Edward Braddock met with a disastrous defeat attempting to cross the Monongahela River at modernday Turtle Creek, about 10mi north of Bedford. The Battle of Kings Mountain, the turning point in the southern campaign, was fought on October 7, 1780, nine miles (14 km) south of the site of the presentday city.
On April 19, 1794 Bedford was hit by a devastating tornado. This was one of the worst storms recorded in Pennsylvania history. The tornado demolished more than 50 homes, killed at least 12 people, and caused more than $100,000 in damage (equivalent to over $1 million in 2016).
