Augusta, Georgia, is rich in history and culture. The city was founded in 1735 by James Oglethorpe and named after Princess Augusta, the wife of Frederick, Prince of Wales.
Augusta served as the capital of Georgia from 1785 until 1795. During this time, the city became a center of trade and commerce. Augusta was also the site of the signing of the Treaty of Yazoo in 1795, which ended the Yazoo Land Fraud scandal.
