History of Central Falls
The city of Central Falls is located in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The city was incorporated in 1824 and has a population of 19,376 as of the 2010 census. The city is bounded by Pawtucket to the east and Lincoln to the north, while Cumberland and Woonsocket border Central Falls to the south and west, respectively.
The site of presentday Central Falls was first inhabited by the Wampanoag tribe. The area was known as the “Great falls” because of the waterfall on the Blackstone River. In 1636, Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, purchased the land from the tribe.
The first Europeans settled in the area in the 1660s. A sawmill was built at the falls in 1669, and the first bridge across the Blackstone River was built in 1670. The farming community that developed along the river was known as the hamlet of Lonsdale.
The industrial revolution began in Central Falls in the early 19th century with the construction of a textile mill at the falls in 1810. More mills followed, and by 1850 the city was one of the leading industrial centers in the country. The Blackstone River provided power for the mills, and the falling water also helped to keep the mill floors clean.
The city grew rapidly in the 19th century, and by the early 20th century it was one of the most densely populated cities in the country. Central Falls also became known for its high rate of crime and poverty.
In the late 20th century, the city’s fortunes began to decline as the manufacturing economy declined. Central Falls declared bankruptcy in 2011, but has since rebound somewhat. The city is now a majority Hispanic community, and its leaders are working to improve conditions and attract new businesses.
