History of International Falls

The city of International Falls is located in the northernmost region of Minnesota, right on the border of the United States and Canada. The city got its start in the late 1800s as a hub for the lumber and paper industries. The area was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe people, who named the falls on the Rainy River “Bois Brule”, or burning wood. The first European settlers of the area were French fur trappers, who established a trading post near the falls in the early 1800s.

In 1887, the Canadian Pacific Railway built a bridge across the Rainy River, linking the two countries and opening up the area for settlement and development. The city of International Falls was officially incorporated in 1903. The lumber and paper industries were booming at the time, and the city grew rapidly as a result. By the mid20th century, the city was known as the “Papermaking Capital of the World”.

Today, the city’s economy is still based largely on the paper industry. However, tourism has also become a major contributor to the local economy, thanks to the city’s proximity to many outdoor recreation areas. International Falls is home to Voyageurs National Park, which is popular for canoeing, camping, and fishing. The city also hosts the annual International Falls Bass Championship, one of the largest fishing tournaments in the country.
