History of Richmond (Kentucky)

Richmond, Kentucky, is a home ruleclass city in and the county seat of Madison County, Kentucky, United States. It is named after Richmond, Virginia, and is the home of Eastern Kentucky University. The city’s population was 36,562 in 2010.

Richmond was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller from Virginia. He rode up to the site with a handful of followers and selected what is now the Main Street area for his settlement, which he called Milburn. Miller laid out his town in the same grid pattern as Lexington, which was also laid out by surveyor Colonel Robert Patterson. However, Richmond was unusual in that it was rectangular rather than having the usual central square.

The town changed its name to Richmond in 1826, due to the increased popularity of the Virginia city of the same name. It was formally incorporated as a city in 1837.

The city has a long history of education, with two colleges and a vocational school founded in the 19th century. Eastern Kentucky University was established in 1906 as Central University, a teacher training school. It expanded over the years to become a comprehensive university and now has over 16,000 students. Madisonville Community College was founded in 1968 as a twoyear school. It was merged with Henderson Community College in 1999 to form the present day college with over 4,000 students. Madisonville Technical College was founded in 1966 as a vocational school. It became a part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System in 2001 and now has over 1,500 students.

Richmond was also the site of a Federal Prisoner of War Camp during World War II. The camp held German and Japanese soldiers who were captured during the war.

Today, Richmond is a small city with a strong sense of community. The downtown area is home to a number of historic buildings, including the courthouse, which dates from 1832. The city is also home to a number of parks and recreation facilities, as well as a growing arts and entertainment scene.
