History of Summersville

Summersville is a city in Nicholas County, West Virginia, USA. The population was 3,372 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Nicholas County.

The community was originally chartered as Nicholas Court House in 1818. The town was renamed Summersville in 1822 for Colonel John Summers, an early settler.

In 1861, the town was occupied by Confederate troops during the American Civil War. The troops burned several bridges in the area to prevent Union forces from crossing the Gauley River.

The town was also the site of the Battle of Summersville, fought on August 19, 1861. This was the first Union victory in the state during the war.

Following the war, the town began to grow rapidly. The Summersville Male and Female Academy was chartered in 1867. In 1869, the town was incorporated.

The growth of the town continued into the 20th century. The first hospital in Summersville opened in 1915. In 1963, Summersville Lake, the largest manmade lake in West Virginia, was completed. The lake and surrounding state park have become a popular tourist destination.

Today, Summersville is a thriving community with a strong sense of history and tradition. The town celebrates its heritage with the annual Summersville Heritage Festival, held each September.
