History of Shildon

Shildon is a town in County Durham, England. The town dates back to at least the 7th century, when it was mentioned in the Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum. In the early 19th century, Shildon was a small market town with a population of around 1,000. The coming of the railways changed everything.

In 1825, the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company built the world’s first steampowered passenger railway from StocktononTees to Darlington. The railway went through Shildon, and the town soon became an important railway hub. In 1837, the North Eastern Railway Company was founded, and Shildon became its headquarters. The town grew rapidly, and by 1901 its population had reached 12,000.

Today, Shildon is still an important railway town. It is home to the National Rail Museum, which tells the story of the railways in Britain.
