History of Baildon

Baildon is a town within the Bradford metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, England and is situated 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Bradford and 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Leeds. It has a population of 18,563, according to the 2011 Census.

The town’s name is derived from the Old English bælling dune, meaning ‘dairy farm on a slope’. The earliest mention of Baildon is in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it is spelt Baldun. Baildon appeared in print for the first time in the Leeds Mercury in 1738.

The town was once part of Baildon Rural District in the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974, when it became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Bradford.

From the 18th century onwards the town began to grow. The population of Baildon was 2,435 in 1801, 3,679 in 1851 and 7,730 by 1901.

The industrial revolution reached Baildon when, in 1792, Mark Farrow opened a a flaxspinning mill at Hollowells. Further textile mills followed, including Baildon Woollen Mill, Brockholes Mill and Rosley Mill. The town also had a number of coal mines. The opening of the Bradford to Leeds Railway in 1846 resulted in Baildon becoming a commuter town for workers in Bradford.

The growth of Baildon continued in the 20th century with the addition of several large housing estates. The 2001 Census showed that the population of Baildon had reached 18,168.

The town is now home to a number of schools and colleges, along with a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. Baildon also has its own library, swimming pool and leisure centre.

The annual Baildon Walkabout, which takes place on the last Sunday in May, is a popular event which attracts walkers from all over the country.
