Riverside, officially the City of Riverside, is a city and county seat in the Riverside County, California, United States. Riverside is the 61stlargest city in the United States and the 11thlargest in California. It serves as the county seat of the Inland Empire region, and ishome to more than 300,000 people. Riverside is the primary city of the RiversideSan BernardinoOntario metropolitan statistical area, which contains more than 4 million people. It is also part of the Greater Los Angeles area. Riverside is located along the Santa Ana River northeast of Downtown Los Angeles.
Riverside is notable for its many distinctive landmarks. The Fox Performing Arts Center, built in 1929, is the centerpiece of the Downtown Riverside Historic District and the largest theater in Riverside. The Mission Inn, also Downtown, is a massive Colonial Revivalstyle hotel built in 1902, and a registered National Historic Landmark. The California Citrus State Historic Park in North Riverside commemorates the region’s citrusgrowing heritage, and includes the restored Arcadia Bandstand from 1903. Riverside is also home to the Riverside National Cemetery, one of the nation’s busiest military cemeteries.
History of Riverside
Riverside is a city in, and the county seat of, Riverside County, California, United States, located in the Inland Empire metropolitan area. Riverside is the 59th most populous city in the United States and 12th most populous city in California. It is also part of the Greater Los Angeles area and is the anchor city of the Inland Empire region, and as such, is the largest inland city in California and the 44th largest in the United States. The city covers 81 square miles (210 km2), and had a population of 303,871 in 2019.
The original settlement in what is now Riverside was founded by John W. North in 1857, who was convinced that the area had great agricultural potential. North and others founded Riverside as a city on March 18, 1883, naming it for its location beside the Santa Ana River. It became the county seat when Riverside County, California, was established on May 9, 1893, and has been the largest city in the county since then.
Riverside was developed into a strong regional center beginning in the late 19th century. The city has varied architecture, including a Spanish Mission Revival main public library, built in 1934; a Tudor Revival Municipal Center, built in 1925; and a Mission Inn, a large hotel built in 1902, which has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The city is also home to the California Museum of Photography, the Riverside Metropolitan Museum, and the California Citrus State Historic Park. Riverside is home to the University of California, Riverside, founded in 1954, one of only four comprehensive universities in the University of California system.
The Santa Ana River flows for 42 miles (68 km) through Riverside, providing a yearround source of recreation and water for the city. Several major thoroughfares cross the city, including the 91 freeway, which connects Riverside to California’s population centers, and the Riverside Freeway, which links Riverside to the Pacific Ocean. The Metrolink commuter rail service also provides transportation to and from Riverside.
The first people known to have settled in the area were the Cahuilla, who established villages along the Santa Ana River. The Serrano, who also arrived in the area later, built their villages on the north side of the river. The Mission San Gabriel Arcangel was founded in 1771, and the area began to be developed into ranchland during the Spanish Colonial period.
After the MexicanAmerican War ended in 1848, the Mission lands were secularized, and the Rancho San Bernardino and Rancho Jurupa land grants were created. The first American settlers in the area were miners who arrived in the 1850s in search of gold, followed by farmers who planted vineyards and orchards. The Southern Pacific Railroad was completed in 1876, making Riverside an important link in California’s coastal trade network.
In the early 20th century, citrus fruits became a major industry in Riverside, and the city became known as the “City of Smiles” because of the abundance of citrus groves. The city was also home to a large number of immigrants from Italy, Spain, and Portugal. In the 1920s, Riverside was one of the fastestgrowing cities in the country, due in part to the easy availability of jobs in the citrus industry.
The Great Depression hit Riverside hard, but the city was able to bounce back due to the continued demand for citrus fruits. During World War II, the city’s population increased dramatically as defense workers were stationed at the March Field airbase. After the war, many of these workers decided to stay in Riverside, further increasing the city’s population.
In the 1950s, Riverside was selected as the site of the University of California, Riverside, which helped to spur the city’s growth. The city’s population continues to grow, and Riverside is now the 12th most populous city in California.
