History of Richardson
Richardson, Texas, is a city in Dallas and Collin counties in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 99,223. Richardson is an affluent inner suburb of Dallas and home to The University of Texas at Dallas and the Telecom Corridor®, with a high concentration of telecommunications companies. More than 5,000 businesses have operations within Richardson’s 28 square miles (73 km2), including many of the world’s largest telecommunications/networking companies: AT&T, Verizon, Cisco Systems, Ericsson, Samsung, ZTE, MetroPCS, and Texas Instruments. Richardson’s city limits are coextensive with the school district boundaries.
In 1846, pioneers settled on land along the Trinity River at the site of Richardson’s presentday Main Street Village. The town of Buckingham was established by European Americans in the 1850s and served as a waypoint on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. In 1863, the U.S. Army built Camp Dallas in the area as part of the Union Army’s war effort against the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The camp was closed after the war’s conclusion and the site was donated to the Buckingham Male and Female Institute (later known as Simmons College). In 1873, the Institute was renovated and renamed in honor of W.C. Richardson.
