Revere is a coastal city in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States, located approximately 4 miles from downtown Boston. The population was 52,433 at the 2010 census. Revere is known for its beaches, including Revere Beach, which is the oldest public beach in the United States. The city has a total area of 10.5 square miles, of which, 7.7 square miles of it is land and 2.8 square miles of it (26.53%) is water. Revere is bordered by Chelsea to the east, Malden to the southeast, Everett to the south, Somerville to the southwest, Cambridge to the west, and Arlington to the northwest. History of Revere
Once part of the town of Chelsea, Revere was founded as a separate municipality in 1846. It was named after the patriot Paul Revere, who rode from Charlestown to Lexington in 1775 to warn colonists of approaching British troops. A Revolutionary War hero, Revere later served as an officer in the Continental Army.
In the early 19th century, Revere was primarily a fishing and farming community. The introduction of the shoe industry in 1825 brought new prosperity to the town, and by the mid19th century, Revere was one of the largest shoe manufacturers in the country. The industry continued to thrive in the early 20th century, and at its peak in the 1920s, more than a dozen shoe companies were located in Revere.
The Great Depression and World War II led to the decline of the shoe industry in Revere. Many factories closed, and the town’s economy suffered. In recent years, however, Revere has undergone a renaissance. The old shoe factories have been converted into office space and apartments, and new businesses have moved into the city.
