History of La Grande
La Grande is a city in the northeastern corner of Oregon, United States. It is the county seat of Union County and the principal city of the La Grande, Oregon Micropolitan Statistical Area. Although the city’s official name is La Grande /ləˈɡrænd/ ( listen), the local pronunciation is /lɑːˈɡrænd/ or simply /ˈlɑːɡrænd/.
The city had a population of 13,082 at the 2010 census. The demographics of the micropolitan area was 24,532 at the 2010 census. La Grande lies along Interstate 84 and is the first major town visitors encounter when traveling east from Portland on the freeway.
The city is home to Eastern Oregon University and the main commercial center for a large agricultural and ranching area of more than 12,000 square miles (31,000 km2). It is also a transportation hub for both highway and rail. La Grande’s Union Valley Reservoir above town is popular for recreation including fishing and watercraft. Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America, begins within 10 miles (16 km) south of the city along the Snake River.
The area was first settled by Native Americans who used the area as hunting grounds. John C. Fremont led the first group of white settlers through the area in 1843. In 1868, the town was platted and named “Alder Point” but was soon changed to “La Grande,” which is French for “the great.”value=A.D.La Grande was officially incorporated as a city in 1887.
The passively cooled Geothermal Resources Center on the campus of Eastern Oregon University was the first building of its kind in the United States, and is one of only four in the world.
