History of Philippi
Founded in 1808 by Philip Alston and John Emory, Philippi quickly became known as the “Barboursville of the South” due to its role as a center of trade and culture in Central Appalachia. A major advantages that Philippi had over other towns in the region was its location at the confluence of the North and South Branch of the Potomac River. This allowed for easy transportation of goods and people to and from the town.
Philip Alston was a highly educated man and his vision for Philippi was to create a town that would be a model of refinement and civilization. To that end, he built a large mansion and donated land for the construction of a courthouse, church, and academy. He also established a weekly newspaper, the Philippi Planter.
The town flourished in the early 19th century, but its prosperity was shortlived. The outbreak of the Civil War led to the occupation of Philippi by Union troops in 1861. The town was the site of the first land battle of the war, known as the Battle of Philippi, or the Philippi Races. Though the Union forces were victorious, they caused significant damage to the town.
