History of West Memphis

The city of West Memphis is located in the southwest corner of the state of Arkansas. It is the county seat of Crittenden County and is considered a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee, which is located just across the state line to the east. The city has a population of just over 26,000 people.

The area on which West Memphis is now located was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Cherokee. West Memphis was founded in 1883 as a railroad town and was originally known as something of a “wild west” town. It was a rough and tumble place, with gamblers, prostitutes, and outlaws all frequenting the town.

As the years went by, West Memphis slowly began to clean up its act. The city began to attract more families and businesses, and by the mid20th century it had become a relatively prosperous and stable place.

However, West Memphis was thrust into the national spotlight in 1993 when three young boys were brutally murdered. The case garnered nationwide attention and led to the arrest and conviction of two men, who became known as the “West Memphis Three.”

The West Memphis Three case remains controversial to this day, with many people believing that the wrong men were convicted. The murders also cast a dark shadow over the city of West Memphis, which has struggled to shake its reputation in the years since.
